They call it work for a reason. -Mr. Morgan

My Dad told me once this and I remind myself of that when work just seems hard.

This was an offhand remark that changed my life.
When I first started freelancing, the company that was hiring me
asked if I wanted an assistant. Since I didn’t feel like I had the
right to have one, I said ‘no, I can do everything myself’ and did
so for a bunch of jobs, doing double the work and grateful to just
have a job. One day, a more experienced freelancer saw me hauling
heavy boxes, rather than taking my place in an art direction
meeting. I was trying to do an assistants job and my more senior
job and not doing a good job of either. He said ‘even if you don’t
need an assistant, ask for one. they’ll respect you more. always
ask for more and chances are you will get it.’
It was about properly valuing myself and I listened. This piece of
advice turned my financial situation around as well as the way I
respected my work and what I had to offer.

And I know that Mother Teresa said something similar, like ‘work until it is no longer work, but prayer’.

I met a man at a party who makes his living sky diving and these were his words.

In my final year of film school, she was trying to convince me to direct my own thesis film. I was scared of failing and all the pre-production work involved in making the film a couple of months before we shot it and thinking of dropping the project and instead being the cinematographer on Selena’s thesis film and a few others. She asked me to imagine how I would feel year from then. Would I be happier having directed my own film or happier having been the cinematographer on a few of my classmates’ films? I told her I’d rather have directed my own. She asked me what I was afraid of and I told her. So she said that she had learned over her life that you should never do anything out of laziness or fear. [Post script: David’s film, Bean Cake, went on to win the Palme D’or, the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.]
